A gas stove’s cooking heat is fuel, not the electric igniter. One burner on high is often around 15,000 BTU per hour. A therm is 100,000 BTU, so that burner is about 0.15 therm per hour while it is on. Two burners, a full cooktop, or the gas oven in the same range are higher. The clock and spark or glow igniter are a few dozen watts — real, and tiny next to the flame.
Whatt puts that typical fuel into the same dollar total as electricity, using your power ¢/kWh as a stand-in. That is not a gas-company tariff. Simmer is much cheaper than a rolling boil once the pot is up to temperature. Lids cut time on high. Oven bake on a gas range belongs on this card’s oven setting, not on the electric oven card, unless the oven really is electric.
Default is one burner medium for an hour. Pick simmer, high, two burners, full cooktop, or oven bake. Electric on the card is igniter and clock only.
At 18.8¢ per kWh as the fuel stand-in, a 0.15 therm/hour high burner for 1 hour is in the same neighborhood as a strong electric element for that hour — which is the point. Pricing only the 50-watt igniter would make gas cooking look free, and it is not.
This page is household cooking. A portable camping burner and a restaurant fryer are other cards. If you have a dual-fuel range (gas cooktop, electric oven), use this card for the cooktop and the electric oven card for the oven.
How to tell
A gas cooktop has a flame and a gas pipe or propane hose. Electric coils and induction glass are the range card. Dual-fuel: this card for the cooktop, electric oven card for the oven.
